Tips For Making DIY Invitations
Party-givers have access to a tremendous selection of free printable party invitations in this Internet age. It seems like no matter what the occasion, there are free invitation images you can download and print on your printer. There are, of course, plenty of the more mainstream variety, such as free printable wedding invitation templates. But there's also a huge selection of invitations you can get free for very specific party types. For example, there are modern wedding invitation templates, pink tea party invitations and many others.
These printable invites are relatively easy to produce if you have access to a word processing program, like Open Office or MS Word; or a publishing program, like Microsoft Publisher or The Print Shop Professional. Simply place the invitation graphic into the software application, scale it to the size you want and print it. As simple as that is, though, you'll want to be aware of some subtleties when making the invitations. The following advice will help you master those subtleties and allow you to get the most value out of invitation art:
- When using MS Word or other word processing software, you can use tables or text boxes to get more than one invitation graphic on a page. This will save you a lot of time -- and card stock. (You'll probably find that using a table is the easier technique to use. If you don't know how to use tables or text boxes, read the help menu of your word processing software program.) Make sure to match up no less than one edge of the invitation art to the other, because that will eliminate one cut that you'll eventually have to make.
- When you cut the invitations apart, using a paper cutter is your best bet. If you don't have one, hire someone to cut them, either at a print shop, copy center or office supply store. If there aren't any stores around you with a paper cutter, the next best method is to use an ruler, X-acto knife and some kind of board that will protect your tabletop from cuts. And if nothing else, you can utilize scissors. If you go that route, make sure to draw faint pencil lines first, so you'll see where you should cut. If you know you can't cut straight, try using patterned scissors that will hide any cutting imperfections.
- Once your invitations are cut, you might want to decorate them. There is a range of three-dimensional embellishments available at craft stores. These include stickers, brads, rhinestones, artificial flowers and many other surprising elements you may have never even seen before. You can also use glitter glue or dimensional paint to customize the invitations. Be careful with this, however, because this is one area that less is truly more. You might try using the glue or paint on only the highlights, not the main areas of the design. And it's a good idea to have extra invitations, so you can feel free to experiment.
