Producing the Ideal Custom Street Sign for Your Road
Road names throughout Great Britain go back centuries, and, for almost as long as people have lived in cities and roads, there have been signs with road names on them. After all, where would famous places, from Pudding Lane to Coronation Street to Albert Square, from Wall Street to Saville Row, be without their iconic street signage?
So street signage is a more important part of the history of Britain and its cultural life, than you might have been thinking. (You might not have known, for example, that during the Second World War they were taken down under the threat of an invasion?) And they do much more than only tell the visitor where they are - these signs can actively enhance an area's particular atmosphere. Road signs in Great Britain broadly comply with European standards, although some are particular to this country. Signs are governed by a set of complex and detailed design guidelines, and made using specialist computer software. Street signage, on the other hand, are not legally considered as traffic signs. This means that town councils and other bodies responsible for them have huge flexibility in where they are placed, and how they are designed. Street signage can be attached to a building, wall, signpost or lamp column. As a convention, the typeface Transport is generally used on street name signage. This multiple-case font is used on all other permanent fixed road signs except route numbers on motorway signs. There are two versions of it: Transport Medium (for light text on dark backgrounds) Transport Heavy (for light backgrounds and darker text). At the same time, it is also usual to see street nameplates bearing the serif font which David Kindersley produced. Of course, the fantastic thing about having custom street signage for your road is that you can have much more control over the entire process. And it's only by customising yours that you can truly have it looking just the way you want it. You'll need to think about keeping your signs sympathetic with the location. A terrace of beautiful village houses, for example, should be signed very differently to a street near a bustling city or town centre. Equally, if you are in Wales, you may want to consider having your street signs in both English and Welsh. Look for a company with a huge amount of experience, and ask to see client testimonials and samples of previous work. And find out how the maker guarantees the quality of its work. What will they do if you are unhappy with the project they make? Ask about the equipment they work with - will they use the latest digital technology to produce the ideal street signage? Lastly, your budget is bound to be one of your considerations. However you might be pleasantly surprised to learn just how affordable bespoke street signage will be.
