The Most Frequently Misdiagnosed Cancers
Of the more than 150 types of known cancers, the following are among the most frequently misdiagnosed:
- Breast cancer
- Colon cancer
- Lung cancer
- Cervical cancer
- Prostate cancer
- Testicular cancer
- Renal cancer
- Ovarian cancer
A misdiagnosis of cancer in any of these instances may result in delayed treatment, the wrong type of treatment, or no treatment at all.
How Misdiagnosis of Cancer Occurs
- The doctor fails to recognize signs and symptoms of cancer and instead diagnoses a different illness or nothing at all. The missed cancer could advance into stages that are not treatable in cases like these.
- The doctor diagnoses the wrong type of cancer; for instance, diagnosing lung cancer when the patient actually has breast cancer. The patient can go through therapy that is not necessary all the while the true source of cancer proceeds to spread.
- There is a cancer diagnosis given by a doctor when there is no presence of cancer. For instance, a diagnosis of breast cancer in a patient who does not have the illness may go through treatments and chemotherapy that are no necessary.
Other issues that may factor into a misdiagnosis of cancer include misinterpreted X-rays, biopsies and/or imaging scans as well as a failure to order tests altogether.
Is the Doctor Responsible?
The responsibility of a misdiagnosis of cancer falls on doctors, lab technicians, pathologists, even medical facilities. Whenever a person feels they were a victim of medical negligence, it is in their best interest to talk to a medical malpractice attorney about the possible liability.
Medical malpractice victims may be able to be awarded compensation for losses such as financial, emotional and physical. The is also valid for families of patients who passed away due to misdiagnosed cancer. If death was the result, families can recover costs of the funeral in addition to damages for loss of a loved one.
