How much would it cost for a custom made dress?

On average, how much does it cost to have a bridal gown custom made? I know that it depends on a lot of different things but I just wanted a general idea.

Hey there...you sound like me! You had something in mind...but wanted to 'tweak it' a little. Or maybe you can't find what you want. Plus, it feels nice to know that your gown was made to fit you perfectly (save money and time on alterations!) and nobody tried on or wore that exact gown at their wedding. Sometimes its nice to having something personalized.

I had a gown custom made by a local designer. That means that I had a real live dress designer make an original gown, not that I ordered some cheap 'Made in China' knockoff 'designer' gown made by poor women in a sweatshop. Sorry, but I really hate the bridal industry and the fact that not only are these 'custom made' designer knockoff gowns fraud, they are also not truly custom designed gowns, and people are often exploited making them. When you pay $200 for a wedding gown, you can only imagine how little the person making it gets.

My gown was somewhere in the $2000-$3000 range including material. I can't remember the exact amount. I thought it was closer to $2000, but my husband said it was higher. Of course, your exact cost will depend on the designer/dressmaker, the dress itself, costs in your area, and the material you choose. I would budget $2000. I think that is a reasonable amount. However, it could cost as 'little' as $600 for s small town dressmaker, or as much as $10,000+ for an urban well known designer.

Your best bet it too look online and check in the phone book for local designers in your area. Try to find someone who specializes in bridal. If you want to keep prices down and are willing to take a risk, try hiring a student from a fashion design college. Usually the senior students have experience and and very good. If money is no object, lucky you, and your options are wide. You can even book appointments with several designers to see which one suits your style best. I went with a consultation first and paid $100, which went down as a deposit for my gown. I suggest that you look at portfolios or samples of the designer's work before hiring them. Some will let you talk to other clients.

Overall, it was a completely worth it experience. Aside from the reasons I already gave, I didn't want the hassle of dress shopping, alterations, waiting for a gown, finding 'the gown", etc. It really reduced my stress for the wedding. It was one less thing to worry about. The gown is made in the exact style you want, and to fit you.

For me, it was the right/best choice. Sounds like you'd be happy too.
