help!! i got a bunch of ink stain on my cotton bag!!!

i have a cotton tote bag, and when i was little i wrote a bunch of words on it with a glittery ink pen, and now i don't like it. how can i remove the ink stains without damaging the bag? and it doesn't say anything about how to wash the bag and stuff. help please!!!!
I use hairspray to get ink out. You spray it well with the hairspray and then rub gently with a towel and repeat until it is out.
